Z machine 这名字听上去好像是 007 (http://cn.engadget.com/tag/JamesBond) 电影里的什么玩意，但实际上它是在美国阿尔伯克基（Alberquerque）桑迪亚国家实验室（Sandia National Laboratories (http://www.engadget.com/tag/sandialabs)）里的一台机器。上面这张照片记录的是 Z machine 放出电磁脉冲 (http://cn.engadget.com/tag/electromagneticpulse)后的一瞬间，实话说在 108 英尺长的范围内电光四射的场景还真是炫目呢。在桑迪亚实验室进行的聚变以及通过强磁压改变物质状态的研究中，这种电磁脉冲都扮演了非常重要的角色。在 2006 年时 Z machine 就能产生比大气压高出 1,000 万倍的压力，而只需使用这其中大约一半的力量就能把钻石融为液体。不用说在进行这种实验时我们肯定都会躲得远远的（科学家：...），不过无论从视觉效果还是科学方面的意义来说，对旁观者而言应该都是非常不错的体验吧。
